Saint Nicholas in his mitre carries a sack of presents and his crozier.
Saint Nicholas the bishop with his staff and sack
Saint Nicholas stands in his bishop's robes, a tall mitre with a cross on his head, a crozier curled at the top in one hand and a sack of presents over his shoulder. He was a bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey, in the fourth century, and his feast in early December is still the day for presents in the Netherlands, on the evening of the 5th, and in Belgium on the 6th; the name Santa Claus comes from Sinterklaas, his Dutch name. The usual colors are a red cape and mitre over a white robe, with gold for the trim and the staff. Santa's workshop shows what the old bishop became.
How to color Saint Nicholas the bishop with his staff and sack
- Red for the cape and the mitre, with the cross and the borders in gold.
- White or cream for the long robe underneath.
- Gold or yellow for the crozier, and brown for the sack.
